Research Projects

CRCA Director Sheldon Brown recently participated in BEYOND MEDIA/OLTRE I MEDIA, an international festival of architecture in video promoted by the Department of Architectural Technologies and Design "Pierluigi Spadolini" of the University of Florence, curated by Marco Brizzi and organized by iMage. The festival has been observing the advance of multimedia devices in the field of architecture by evaluating their impact on contemporary architectural production and by promoting quality and research in the development of communication media for design projects.

StudioLab was created with the assistance of eight UCSD students: Alex Dragulescu, CRCA Graduate Student Researcher, Cal-(IT)2 Graduate fellow; Matt Hope, CRCA Graduate Student Researcher, Cal-(IT)2 Graduate Fellow; David Poulin, CRCA Graduate Student Researcher; Joel Murphy, CRCA Graduate Student Researcher; Craig Donner, Computer Science PhD student; Ben Maggos, Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts (ICAM) Major, Cal-(IT)2 undergraduate fellow; Chris Berg, ICAM Major, Cal-(IT)2 Undergraduate Fellow; and Wes Middleton, ICAM Major. The maize-like environment, suggesting forms derived from the cinema and movie projectors, features two monitors highlighting Brown’s multimedia work Smoke and Mirrors and Istoria, as well as an 80-foot long digital print highlighting the work of the students who assisted with the project. The development of StudioLab reflects a unique pedagogical approach that has developed at UCSD incorporating aspects of art-making studios, media production facilities, as well as engineering and experimental gaming labs.

CRCA-Related Events

Over the summer CRCA takes a break from public events, so we try to promote activities and public presentations by our researchers. These may take place anywhere throughout the United States or internationally, and some have net components that allow you to view or interact with them remotely. We hope you will check back again for other exciting offerings by CRCA artists and researchers, and drop us a line if you'd like to be placed on our email announcement or event list: crca@ucsd.edu.

Have a great summer!
