Research : Public Art

Public art works provide a forum for CRCA artists to directly address the changing terrain of the physical world that the developments of the digital media realm are creating. Interactive, digitally based media forms, blur the boundaries between physical space and media space. Media is continuing to become more immersive, more intimate and more pervasive as it takes on scales which extend beyond the architectural to the global, and at the other end, move from the portable to the biologically embedded.

Research Projects

Biospheria, a multi-site environmental opera, was developed by grad researchers Anthony Burr/music and Stephen Ausbury/visual arts in the spring of 2001. The performances were presented at CRCA and on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. Biospheria is based on the phenomenon of Biosphere 2, a self-contained, artificial ecosystem located in Arizona in which eight people lived for two years in the early 1990s.

Drive by Muzak - A sound environment by Eliza Slavet as part of the "SPACED OUT: California Vernacular" at the UCSD Price Center.

If Frogs Sicken and Die... - An artistic exploration on the internet addressing life-cycle issues.

In the Event - Sheldon Brown was commissioned by the Seattle Arts Commission for this piece at the Key Arena.

Mi casa es Tu Casa - binational, networked, virtual reality playhouse by Sheldon Brown.

Point Loma Waste Treatment Plant - George Lewis's commission from the City of San Diego created an interactive kiosk at the Pt. Loma Waste Treatment Plant.

The Video Wind Chimes - The Video Wind Chimes project by Sheldon Brown is a public artwork/video installation that connects the movement of the wind to the revelation of the pervasive electromagnetic fields which inhabit the atmopshere.

CRCA-Related Events

Over the summer CRCA takes a break from public events, so we try to promote activities and public presentations by our researchers. These may take place anywhere throughout the United States or internationally, and some have net components that allow you to view or interact with them remotely. We hope you will check back again for other exciting offerings by CRCA artists and researchers, and drop us a line if you'd like to be placed on our email announcement or event list: crca@ucsd.edu.

Have a great summer!
