Research : Spatialized Media
Work
done in virtual reality by CRCA researchers uniquely focuses
on the development of the semantic structures of virtual reality
environments and the integration of computer simulated environments
with the physically based environments.
Research Projects
"Smoke and Mirrors" by Sheldon Brown, a virtual reality Commission for Reuben H. Fleet Science Center The Rueben H. Fleet Science Center has commissioned artist and CRCA Director,
Sheldon Brown to create the virtual reality exhibit Smoke and Mirrors. This
project allows two to six visitors at a time to enter into a shared virtual
environment through their own projected computer graphic media portal. This virtual world is aimed specifically at adolescents and young adults, immersing
them in an active engagement with the historically shifting image of tobacco usage.
It is intended to deconstruct and reveal how consumers, are the unwitting participants
in a tobacco conspiracy that carefully re-crafts an image of its products to maximize
their consumption, with callous disregard for either the truth or the lives of its customers. The project has been developed by artist Sheldon Brown with
assistance from Craig Donner, Wes Middleton and Chris Berg. read more
Mi Casa es Tu Casa/My House is Your House - A binational, networked, virtual reality playhouse by Sheldon Brown
Apparitions - Documentation of an early virtual environment and physical installation at UCSD.
TRAnSIT - With Audio Spatialization, the TRAnSIT project develops spatialization paradigms and authoring systems for a variety of applications including both distributed media and real time performance.
Fleece - Harry Castle wrote Fleece as a real-time 3D tool for sound motion in space.
Watershed - Reynolds continues to be a leader in the field of new music by creating the first music DVD-Video project: Watershed -- the DVD.
Istoria - At the intersection between computer graphics and computer ontrolled fabrication comes the development of techniques for computer controlled sculptural production. The Istoria project brings the conerns and sensibilities of the sculptor to a realm that has been created primarily by manufacturing interests, pointing to specific research and development issues that are leading to innovative approaches to 3D scene scanning, computer modeling methodologies and computer controlled object forming techniques. The artworks in Sheldon Brown's "Istoria" are multiple panel wall relief sculptures that are constructed with a variety of computer controlled fabrication processes from 3-D databases.
